Reading program was a success

To the editor:

Over a two week period during the month of April, Dublin Consolidated School students participated in the 4th Annual Read-A-Thon sponsored by the Dublin Consolidated School Parent-Teacher Organization.

This year the DCS PTO challenged our students (aka “Bookworms”) to “Read for the Record!” The goal was to beat last year’s huge milestone of 52,373 minutes. If they could do it, they would break the school record! Each previous year a minute goal was set and surpassed. Once again, Toadstool Bookshop generously offered to provide books for our school library if the goal was reached. The DCS PTO agreed to match this donation.

The quest to “Read for the Record” began with a kickoff assembly. DCS fifth graders performed their latest installment of what’s become an annual skit: This time it was “Sons of TV Man” trying to avenge their father’s death by attaching everyone to video games. Thank goodness “Book Boy,” “James Book” and “Super Bookworm” — played by our beloved Principal May Clark — came to the rescue and got everyone reading! Suddenly an east wind blew and with it came Mary Poppins, who read a chapter from her famous book — thank you Deb Lang! With that our “Bookworms” were off and reading for the record.

Every day minutes were tallied. The thermometer in the lobby tracking the results started to fill. Everyone wondered, “Can the Bookworms do it? Will the record fall?” When the last day arrived and every minute was counted, the grand total was 57,822 minutes! They did it! To celebrate this amazing accomplishment, the PTO hosted a special lunch. “Super Bookworm” and her friends returned to join the party! Each “Bookworm” then received an engraved gold medal in honor of their remarkable achievement.

The DCS PTO would like to congratulate all of our “Bookworms” on a job well done! We are so proud of you! Thank you to Toadstool Bookshop for their very generous donation. Our library has gained new books for everyone to enjoy for years to come. Special thanks to all of the DCS families, teachers and staff members for helping make this event a huge success and a lot of fun! Keep reading “Bookworms!”
