Teacher to speak to Dublin School grads

Head of School Bradford Bates has announced that Brooke Comer will be the speaker at the 77th graduation of Dublin School on Saturday.

Comer teaches writing and journalism at the American University in Cairo. She is responsible for designing and implementing three Community Based Learning courses in which AUC students work with African Refugees and Egyptian street children on writing projects to build student research and promote active learning, as well as mutual tolerance and acceptance of “the other.”

Her student writing has been published in the volume Voices in Refuge (AUC Press, 2009). As a journalism teacher, her students produced El Kobri, the online student magazine used as a forum for dialogue between students at Duke University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to her teaching, Comer serves as a philanthropist and an advocate for refugee children, organizing writing workshops and sending children to school in Cairo and in America. She was appointed to her post in January 2005 and the focus of her research is imagination as a transcendent power in the lives of refugee and Egyptian street children in Cairo. Her focus is also on the availability and quality of education, as well as the impact of gender identity on the success with which young female refugees adjust and succeed in asylum and resettlement.

She also co-created the first collaboration between AUC and American University in Beirut (AUB), working with Dr. Rabih Shibli in a course titled Problematics in Cultural Landscapes in Cairo and Lebanon, in which students measure the relationship between inhabitants and the marginalized public spaces they occupy. This course is taught in Cairo and Beirut.

Comer served as an interim instructor at the University of Southern California. She holds a BA from U.C. Berkeley and an MA from New York University.
