ConVal senior pitcher Ivon Clough signed his letter of intent to pitch for the University of Maine next year. The burly 5’11” righthander was 5-2 last year with 74 strikeouts and a 1.58 ERA while batting .377 and only striking out three times himself. Clough will bring his 89-mph fastball to a Division I Black Bear team that has seen six players picked in the MLB draft in the past three seasons, four of whom are also right-handed pitchers.

Clough had narrowed his choices down to a few select schools, including the University of Rhode Island, but said his decision was made a lot easier after meeting the Black Bear coaches and players.

“As soon as I walked onto the campus for my first visit,” Clough said, “everyone was ready to go to Omaha for the College World Series. That’s every kid’s dream, to compete for a title. Those guys want to play ball. They’re hard-nosed kids.”

While many baseball prospects have to weigh their options and sell themselves to schools deep into their senior seasons, Clough is now in the enviable position of entering his final year of ConVal baseball with his future well-mapped, giving him the chance to focus on winning for the Cougars rather than making himself more attractive to potential college suitors.

“It’s definitely a weight off my shoulders,” Clough said. “It’s an opportunity to go ahead and work and succeed.”
