Lacrosse, baseball, softball all qualify for postseason
The division III track and field championships were held at Inter-Lakes high school in Meredith on May 31. Athletes from Mascenic, Conant, and WIlton-Lyndeborough competed.
On Thursday, the Orioles hosted the Sanborn Indians. Conant’s No. 1 Shannon Bennett dispatched her opponent with ease, winning 8-1. Beside her on the No. 2 court, sister Allina Bennett played a spirited match against her opposite number, eventually winning 8-5 in what was the longest match of the afternoon. Courtney Dillon took down her opponent 8-1 and Ashley Rogers won 8-2.
The Orioles clinched a trip to the next round when Hannah Clark won her match 8-4, and the Conant girls briefly celebrated before getting back to business. After that, Hannah Duncan dropped her singles match, 8-3.
In doubles play, the Bennett sisters teamed up to smoke Sanborn’s top two, 8-1. Clark and Dillon shut out their opponent 8-0; the Rogers/Duncan combo lost their match 9-7.
On Monday, the No. 2 Orioles faced a familiar opponent in No. 3 Bow. Conant had defeated Bow back on April 28 to take the top spot in DIII at the time. This time went just as well for the Orioles, as they battled to a 5-1 victory. Earning wins for Conant were Allina Bennett (8-6), Courtney Dillon (8-4), Ashley Rogers (8-6), Hannah Clark (8-6) and Hannah Duncan (8-2).
With the win, Conant earned a spot in the DIII championship tomorrow at Derryfield (4 p.m.). The Orioles will face off against either No. 1 Moultonborough, who handed Conant their only loss of the season, or No. 4 Littleton. Results from that semifinal match were not available by press time.
