Bill McAuley

Occupation: Insurance

Time living in town: 14 years

Previously elected offices: Francestown Selectman for 6 years. Member of the Francestown Budget Advisory Committee.

Other qualifications: BS degree Boston University, UNH/DOT Highway Master Roads Scholar. Forty years management experience with expertise in loss prevention engineering, healthcare and property casualty insurance.

What are two issues you feel are important and how do you plan to address them?

1. Money. The current mess in Washington only serves to highlight the need for sound fiscal management and not saddling our future generations with debt. This is true on all levels — national, state and local. The coming years present us with a host of critical infrastructure issues such as bridge replacement, restoration of town buildings and other challenges, all the while continuing to provide needed services for the citizens. Every available grant, federal and state aid program and non-local tax source of revenue must be pursued. Careful management of limited tax dollars will be critical to our meeting these challenges while not burdening future generations with debt or the current citizens with unmanageable taxes. We accomplished this in my previous two terms as Selectman and can do so again.

2. Infrastructure priorities. Buildings need maintenance, roads need repair, inadequate facilities need to be upgraded and the gorilla in the closet – our “red listed” bridges — need to be rebuilt. Not all these issues are under our control such as the recent closing of the Second NH Turnpike due to a failed bridge. While we attempt to anticipate and address major funding issues, we also have to able to respond to such unplanned for events. We cannot do it all and still maintain an acceptable level of taxes. It is imperative that we list and prioritize our needs and outline alternatives for each with input from the citizens. Alternative methods and sources of funding need to be sought. Alternative ways of doing business explored. Difficult choices must be made. Why should government be satisfied with the status quo? “Because we have always done it that way” is not an acceptable answer. We need to elect experienced business oriented people to office to move us forward and ensure that our infrastructure is sound, the needs of our citizens are met and we continue to ensure our employees are valued. I have 40 years’ experience managing people and budgets in business. These principles will also serve the town well.

Time Living in Town: Since 1980, when he moved from Greenfield

Previously Elected Offices: Greenfield Selectman 1977-1980; Francestown Selectman 1996-1999; incumbent Francestown Selectman 2010-2013.

Other qualifications: Peterborough High School graduate, attended Finlandia Univ. in Michigan, US Army Vietnam Vet, served on Francestown Waste Disposal Commission from 1985-95 and 2007-2010, 8 years of service to Francestown Highway Study Committee (now disbanded), current member of Patriotic Purposes Committee, active in Francestown Improvement and Historical Society.

What are two issues you feel are important and how do you plan to address them?

There are many projects that I’d like to see to completion – the renovation/restoration of the Town Hall in cooperation with the work being done by the Heritage Commission, continue working as the Francestown representative to the ConVal Selectmen’s Advisory Committee (SAC) as the cost of education is almost 70 percent of the town’s budget, re-facing of the historic town clock, and have a temporary bridge installed over the 2nd NH Turnpike S as having a major roadway cut off is a hazard to the safety of many of the residents in the southern end of town. I’d also like to encourage more citizen participation in weekly Selectmen’s meeting as communication and transparency in government is a necessity.
