Francestown Garden Club offering scholarship

The Francestown Garden Club is offering a $1,500 award for the best essay from a local student interested in the environment.

The Garden Club scholarship encourages a range of interests and educational goals for Francestown students. Sara Uhl, the first winner of the scholarship, has worked for Clean Water Action. Other past applicants have attended medical school, learned CPR, studied forensic science or robotics, and pursued careers in dental hygiene or physical therapy.

To date, close to $9,000 has been awarded to Francestown students, most of whom have used this cash award to purchase supplies.

The Club’s annual Plant Sale, scheduled for May 18, is the major fundraiser for this scholarship fund.

Applicants must be (1) a Francestown resident and (2) either a college-bound high school senior (public, private, or home-schooled) or a college undergraduate (any year). Previous applicants are welcome to reapply.

Application requirements include a 500-word essay on “Gardening: Best to Be Green” and a brief cover letter (with name, address, zip, and phone number) and a self introduction and explanation for how the scholarship will be used. Submission deadline is April 15.

Send applications and cover letter to Francestown Garden Club, P.O. Box 212, Francestown 03043; or email essay and cover letter with contact information to edefroster@comcast.net.
