Bass says he won’t run for Senate
Veteran Republican will focus on new business
Former New Hampshire Congressman Charlie Bass of Peterborough has decided not to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jeanne Shaheen.
In a statement released Monday, Bass wrote, “After much thought and several discussions with my family, friends and colleagues, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2014. Though I am confident that a strong Republican nominee will defeat Democrat Jeanne Shaheen next year, my current personal and professional responsibilities preclude my candidacy. I sincerely thank all who have called, emailed or encouraged me in person to run.”
Bass said he was not retiring from politics and would continue to recruit candidates and raise funds for the Republican party.
“I will always work to support the principles of smaller government, less spending, lower taxes, free enterprise to create good jobs and a strong economy,” Bass wrote.
Bass served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2013. In 2013, he lost his seat to current U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster.
