ConVal’s food service is good for all
To the editor:
For years, the school budget hawks — most notably Mr. Chapman — have complained about an annual food service loss of $400,000. The statement is misleading, and after seeing this falsehood mentioned repeatedly over the years, I feel the need to comment.
In fact there is no “loss.” Mr. Chapman is upset because — after a thorough review and an honest vote — the food contract wasn’t awarded to the lowest bidder. Instead it was granted to a firm that offers its employees better wages and benefits — and also provides our children with fresher ingredients and healthier options. In fact, the food-service company serving ConVal has won numerous awards for the high quality of food it delivers to our children.
Obesity, diabetes and other serious, and preventable, health-care issues are on the rise across the U.S. We should be doing everything possible to give our children a healthy head start — and to pay our neighbors a fair wage.
