Area chance to improve education

To the editor:

Our district has an amazing opportunity to elevate itself as a progressive and outstanding district. How and why, you may ask? We have been advised over the past couple years that student enrollment is considerably low and declining. There is a higher population consisting of families with grown children. Where are the young families? Are they moving out of the area? How can we solve this dilemma?

The Monadnock area is a bountiful gem. We are surrounded by natural beauty and recreation opportunities, the arts and theater, and a tremendous culture of community. Our district is in a prime location, and position, to make a grand move. Why not use this time and opportunity to think outside the box and take a step forward for our children’s education?

Our current educational function is based on a structure created in the industrial age. It is not relevant in today’s technological and scientific age. Nor is it relevant to a shift in education for outside and nature-based learning. We currently utilize great programs through the Harris Center and the Arts Enrichment programs, through which our children demonstrate deep and essential learning. What if there was a district where these were the driving programs around which relevant curricula and higher thinking are centered?

Our teachers are highly educated and committed. They are an excellent, professional, resource for what works, and what does not, in the public school classroom. Our parents are tremendous resources and advocates for what our children need and want in education. Our children are our greatest source of what motivates and inspires them.

Let us start a conversation about how our district can take this opportunity to draw new families to the ConVal school district by reaching for educational excellence outside the norm.
