7 injured in 3-car crash on Route 31
WILTON — A three-car accident on Route 31 in Wilton sent one of the drivers to the hospital by a medflight helicopter, and left six other people with minor injuries on Monday evening.
The accident occurred on Route 31 South near Davidson Road at 4:41 p.m., following a report that a vehicle had crossed the center line, colliding with two southbound vehicles, according to a press release issued by the Wilton Police Department on Monday evening. The car that crossed the line, a 2004 Dodge Neon operated by Cindy April, 27, of Milford, first struck a 2005 Chevy Cobalt being driven by Mandi Maloney, 35, of New Ipswich. April’s vehicle then struck another car head on, a 2006 Ford Freestyle, driven by Rosalind Bertram, 27, of Greenville.
The most seriously injured at the scene was April, who was airlifted by Boston Med Flight to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. for treatment. One other person was also sent to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, according to police. Police did not release the name, age or gender of the person transported, but confirmed it was a juvenile. Five other people were treated at the scene by emergency personnel and released without further treatment, and an additional passenger was uninjured, according to police.
“It was a busy accident scene with the amount of patients there,” said Wilton Police Officer Michael Abel, who is investigating the crash.
Abel said it was too early to determine what the causing factor was in the accident.
“It’s still an ongoing investigation and there are a lot of questions that need to be answered,” said Abel. He could not confirm whether factors such as speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash. “That’s still under investigation, and we would have to be farther along in the investigation before we’d be comfortable stating any contributing factors,” he said.
Abel said he was not aware of April’s status on Tuesday afternoon. Calls to UMass Memorial Medical Center seeking April’s patient status were not returned by press time Tuesday.
