Mascenic and Conant took the field on Tuesday afternoon for a game that saw both teams trot out their aces for a pitchers’ duel between a pair of juniors. Mascenic’s Shane Rautiola and Conant’s Ryan Carey both brought their best stuff to the table that day.

Carey was able to work his way out of a few jams on the day, including a first inning in which Mascenic notched three hits, one apiece by Matt Cyr, Jared Stauffeneker and Rautiola, but were unable to plate a run. The Vikings’ bats have been hot as of late — they roughed up Monadnock ace Ben Mallett as well as Hopkinton stud Jake Nelson — but Carey held them relatively quiet.

“That’s the first time we’ve been held in check like that,” said head coach Kevin Rines after the game. “Ryan did an exceptional job.”

Rines pointed to Carey’s ability to throw it by hitters and then work in a change of pace as the key to his success.

“He keeps kids off balance, which is the biggest thing in Division III,” Rines said.

But Mascenic’s ace Rautiola was able to match Carey pitch for pitch, holding the Orioles to a mere three hits.

“Everything was working today,” Rautiola said after the game. “I was able to really hit my spots.”

In fact, the only run Rautiola gave up on the day was unearned. In the top of the fourth, Orioles’ freshman third baseman Chance Kirby reached on an error and advanced on a fielders’ choice before a high fastball glanced off Stauffeneker’s catcher’s mitt and skittered to the backstop with the catcher in chase. Kirby slid in under Rautiola’s tag at the plate and tallied the first Oriole run of the day.

Mascenic fought right back in the bottom of the fourth, as Roman Ojala singled and scored on a Daimon Gibson single to even the game at 1-1. The Vikings were able to put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Carey was able to retire Chase Holombo, Travis Rautiola and Gibson in short order to end the inning without any damage.

The game would go into extra innings, and in the top of the seventh, Conant put Shane Rautiola to the test. Scrappy second baseman JP Record knocked a one-out single and then advanced to second on a Josh Warner groundout. With sophomore Garrett Poole, the No. 9 hitter, at the plate and the potential winning run in scoring position, Rines came out to the mound to calm his young star pitcher.

“He told me just to go right after him,” Rautiola said. “You can’t take it easy just because he’s the ninth hitter.” It was sage advice, as three of the Orioles’ four hits on the day came from the 7-8-9 slots in the order. But Rautiola buckled down and forced a grounder down to Ojala at first base, who touched the bag unassisted to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 8th, Rautiola came up and led off with a sharply hit single up the middle. Ojala would advance him to second with a sacrifice groundout. With two outs, Chase Holombo came to the plate and roped one through the defense — more than enough to plate Rautiola and send the Vikings into jubilation.

“That was awesome,” Rautiola said. “Chase came up huge and I was just there to cross the plate.”

After the game, Rautiola had nothing but respect for the opposing pitcher.

“Hats off to Ryan Carey,” Rautiola said. “He pitched a great game. It’s always fun to play against him.”

Mascenic now sits at 6-5, pending the results of last night’s game vs. Hillsboro-Deering. The Vikings are 16th overall in DIII. The loss bumps the Orioles down to 22nd in the division at 5-7 with four games remaining.
