Bounty of backyard birds
To the editor:
I look forward to reading Francie Von Mertens’ column “Backyard Birder” every two weeks. As a bird/animal lover, it is the first article I read. After reading the article May 2, I wanted to comment on a couple of things. First, my husband, Gary, and I saw our first hummingbird April 28 at 5 p.m. Last year I put the feeders out early and had more hummingbirds than ever.
So far I have seen rose breasted grosbeaks, a bunch of evening grosbeaks, goldfinch and all the regulars. For the last three years I have had a male red bellied woodpecker as a regular, but today for the first time I spotted a female. I have seen them together so I’ll hope to see some young ones. How exciting.
I have friends comment on how many different birds come to our yard. I think it’s because I have three bird baths spring through fall and a heated one in the winter, plus feeders packed all year. I do take them in every night May through July because of bears visiting us. It is worth all the effort because the variety of colors and sounds is such a joy.
