Educational programs on edible, medicinal plants and fungi
The Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock will offer two educational programs that will focus on local edible and medicinal plants and fungi: “Wild Historical Tea Party” for all ages on Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m., and “Sustainable Wild Medicine Foraging Intensive” for adult learners on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At the tea party, Andrea Marshall will be leading children and families in a greater understanding of the abundance that surrounds us. We will learn to identify safe and nutritious plants that have been historically enjoyed by humans in soup, salad and root beer and more. We will then return to the Harris Center kitchen to prepare and sample wild tea made from plants sustainably harvested from our conserved lands. This hands-on class will introduce students to the science of ethno-botany through the teaching of fun historical facts about human food and foraging patterns, ethics and sustainability. The Harris Center’s Environmental Studies Institute will be hosting an interactive intensive for adult learners, A Sustainable Wild Medicine Intensive for Adults. This is an in-depth class, taught by Andrea Marshall, will explore concepts of traditional botanical/fungal medicine, modern biochemistry, ethics and sustainability. We will spend time in the field and in the kitchen. We will be working with plant and lichen Identification, traditional home preparation of tinctures, teas and syrups, application, health promoting tonics and preventing infection using local plants and lichen.
