Scouts to hold  hike-a-thon

To earn money for summer camp, 150 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts will hike and bike the back roads of Hancock and parts of Antrim on Saturday. The Hike-a-Thon is an annual event for which Scouts take pledges per mile, then hike a preset distance. The hike takes place between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The Scouts, ages 7 to 17, will hike along with their leaders from Seven Maples Campground, out Shady Lane, then following Brimstone up and over Ball Hill. When the old town road ends at Depot, Scouts will return down Depot to the now-closed section of Longview, then back to Seven Maples, for a total of about 5.15 miles.

As they travel, Scouts will be picking up trash on the roadsides.

Scouts ages 14 and older may use mountain bikes on another route which takes them up Shady Lane, on Birch, then north on old Hancock Road into Antrim, and into the village of Antrim. After a water stop, the Scouts will return via Antrim Road, back to Birch and then return to Seven Maples.

Mount Monadnock District organizers ask that residents slow down near the Scouts, groups of whom will be spread out along the route.
