Come help out on Old Home Day

To the editor:

I feel that I need to explain myself in regards to how I was quoted in comments in last week’s article about the future of the Hancock Old Home Days weekend. My friends and family may think that I am rapidly becoming a “Grumpy Old Man,” but at the Hancock Selectboard’s meeting last Monday, I was simply playing the Devil’s Advocate in floating the idea that we cancel Old Home Days for a year.

I am not the Grinch, and despite what a certain Selectman said, I am not in favor of canceling Christmas. I have enjoyed participating in the Old Home Day festivities since I moved to town in 1985. For 20 plus years, I have joined the hardworking members of the Fire Department in cooking hundreds of chicken dinners that we serve under our big tent on the Common every year. While we do not make a huge amount of money at our barbeque, it is a pleasure to see all the familiar faces that come out to enjoy a meal with their townsfolk.

Hancock needs a few young and enthusiastic people to step up and help out with the Old Home Day Committee each year. It is a bit of work, but quite rewarding at the end of the day, and you get to meet all us “grumpy old people” in town as well. Don’t worry, we don’t bite!

Oh yeah, one other thing: “Get Off My Lawn!”

Nevan Cassidy,
