Women Who Care meeting set for Oct. 17

The second meeting of 100+ Women Who Care Peterborough is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Local women are encouraged to join the effort in making a larger local impact with charitable donations to local nonprofits through participating in a nationally recognized giving circle.

The newly founded group is scheduled to meet on Oct. 17, at the Sharon Arts Gallery at 30 Grove St. at 6:30 p.m. to make a collective donation to a nonprofit organization serving one or more of the following towns: Peterborough, Jaffrey, Dublin, Greenfield, Temple, Antrim, Sharon, Hancock, Francestown, Harrisville, Nelson, Rindge or Bennington. The group’s ultimate goal is to get 100 women to join the group and have each write a $50 check each quarter, thereby providing up to $20,000 annually to selected local charities.

During its first meeting on July 18, members voted on, and donated $1,325 to, the kitchen at the Peterborough Community Center, which will provide a teaching resource through partnerships with local growers and food producers, including the Cornucopia Community Garden and The River Center’s Farm to Table program. St. Joseph’s Community Services has expressed a significant interest in renting the kitchen as a hub to prepare Meals-on-Wheels for Peterborough recipients.

“Our group requires minimal commitment, which results in major impact,” explains founder Carol Nelson. “We realize women are busy with family, work and other commitments, so keeping the meetings to one hour only four times a year is critical for its success,” explains Nelson. “Based on feedback from local members, we veered slightly from the national guidelines by only requiring our members to commit to $50 per quarter rather than $100, and that seems to be working well.”

Voted on by the group, one nonprofit is selected to receive the individual checks from the members, and the checks are written directly to the nonprofit so they’re tax deductible and there are no administrative fees for 100+ Women Who Care Peterborough. The group is open to all women interested in participating. Members who attend and contribute at meetings are eligible to nominate and vote for local charities to be considered for the quarterly donation.

The Oct. 17 meeting will include registration and social time from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, visit www.100womenwhocarepeterborough.com.
