Time to move on from fossil fuels

To the editor:

On these pages there has been recent discussion on the new Peterborough solar plant proposed. Well-meaning people have expressed concern over the new solar plant. Numbers, formulas, costs and efficiencies. Those opposed may be concerned about their money being misspent or their taxes going up…the future won’t care much about taxes.

The people of the future will wonder why we didn’t do more; why were we opposed to sustainable, zero CO2 emitting solar or hydro or wind. No one seemed to mention that at the end of the 20-year lease buy back program the solar panels and the energy generated will be owned exclusively by Peterborough. Sure there will be maintenance costs and upgrades but we maintain buildings and roads now, right?

As a Jaffrey resident, I have no say as to what goes on in other towns. As a citizen of the world, I say, “Bravo Peterborough…keep doing ‘watt’ you can do.”

We as a species must become aware of the reality that preserving our own individual wealth comes to future generations as indifference or disregard. While there may be better solutions to energy in the future, oil is a thing of the past; natural gas and propane will rise and not fall with demand increases; and there sits the sun, providing billions of watts of ultimately free energy without the costs of soldiers’ lives on faraway battlefields.

Solar, wind, hydro — these things allow us the imperfect way to start to back away from the dependence on that 5,000 mile straw. For the record, a “spoiled” view is an opinion with which we all do not agree.
