June 2 concert to feature area organists
The Monadnock American Guild of Organists organ concert will be held at the First Congregational Church on Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m.
The concert, being performed by members of the Monadnock Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, is being held to help raise money in support of a scholarship program for young organists.
The organists performing include Ann Carley, Robert Englund, Gene C. Faxon, Mary Ann Flemming, Kevin Mathieu, Bob Popple, Renea Waligora, and student Andy Ulrich, all from the Monadnock region.
The music will include works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Pachlbel, Theodore Dubois, Charles Wesley, Gordon Young, J.S. Bach and more.
The concert will be performed on a historic pipe organ, the Estey Opus #533, built in 1908. The Estey Organ Co. was located in nearby Brattleboro, Vt., for more than 100 years, from 1852 to the 1960s. At one time it was considered the largest manufacturer of reed and pipe organs in the world with organs in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
AGO member Kevin Mathieu, organist and pipe organ technician, will explain and demonstrate the workings of this unusual instrument.
Young pianists interested in learning to play the organ are encouraged to attend and learn more about the instrument, the scholarship program, and the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
