Annual Poker Run set for July 14
The Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce will host its sixth annual Motorcycle Poker Run on Sunday, July 14, sponsored by Red’s of Jaffrey/Monadnock Disposal Service.
This year’s route brings riders through the twists and turns of some of the area’s less traveled side roads, including traveling over one of the region’s historic covered bridges. Once again, riders will register at the Monadnock Plaza on Peterborough Street in Jaffrey. Registration will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the cost to join the ride is $20 per person.
Riders and their passengers will embark on a scenic tour through southern New Hampshire. Along the way, they will stop at predetermined locations and draw playing cards, building their hand. There will be raffle prizes to win, a 50/50 raffle and other prizes. This year, grand prize for the best hand is a $150 gift certificate donated by Howard’s Leather of Spofford.
The ride will end at the American Legion in Jaffrey where riders and volunteers will enjoy a barbecue lunch, cash bar and music. Mr. Mike’s Market and The 99 Restaurants will be donating much of the food. Those who would like to enjoy the barbecue but do not ride can join us in the afternoon at a cost of just $10.
As in years past, organizers have been working with the Taylor family for the ride. In 2006, a motorist tragically killed Marty Taylor, a native of Jaffrey, certified motorcycle mechanic and avid rider. In his memory, his family set up a scholarship fund. It is awarded every year to a graduate of Conant High School wishing to pursue higher education in the vocational or technical-related field. To date, the Chamber has contributed over $4,000 to the fund from the proceeds of the Poker Run.
