Millipore to add 100 parking spots

Unclear if move sets up future expansion

JAFFREY — One hundred new parking spaces for employee use will be added to EMD Millipore Corporation’s existing industrial facility at 11 Prescott Rd.

Millipore’s application to amend its previously approved site plan with the addition of an expanded parking lot and concrete plaza was approved by the Planning Board following a public hearing Tuesday. Millipore is a division of Merck KgaA of Germany and a leading manufacturer of medical and pharmaceutical filters worldwide.

According to Millipore’s application, the new parking spaces are for existing employees. It is unclear at this time whether or not the plan for additional parking spaces may be tied to a larger expansion plan for the Jaffrey facility. Messages left at Millipore on Wednesday were not returned by press time.

Jo Anne Carr, Jaffrey’s director of planning and economic development, said Wednesday that the additional parking spaces will be constructed along the front of the building adjacent to Turnpike Road. The main impetus for the expanded parking lot, Carr said, was to ease traffic congestion at the industrial facility during employee shift changes.

Residents in attendance at Tuesday’s public hearing expressed concern about increased lighting and noise, as well as how the company’s plans to landscape the area so that the parking lot is not an eyesore to drivers on Turnpike Road, according to Carr.

Representatives from Millipore told town officials Tuesday that only downward lighting will be installed and that the company does not anticipate additional noise, Carr said. In an effort to address concerns about landscaping, Millipore agreed to submit a more detailed landscaping plan to the town’s building inspector and code enforcement officer as a condition of site plan approval.

Carr said the additional parking is expected to improve through traffic at the site and also provide increased space for emergency personnel to access the building if necessary.

As of 2011, Millipore employed more than 800 people, according to Facilities Manager Rob Jackson. Jackson said at that time that Millipore was seeing an increased demand for its products, which are sold to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the life science industry.
