Three local teams to play in girls holiday tournament

The 12th annual Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament hosted by Keene State College will kick off today.

Three local teams will play in the three-day tournament that will feature eight programs from the southern part of the state.

Wilton-Lyndeborough will begin the annual event, playing in it for the second time in three years, with a match-up against a familiar Division IV opponent, Hinsdale. The two have already played once this season, won by Hinsdale, and will square off again on Jan. 22. The Warriors, who enter the game with a 3-2 mark in the regular season, will play at 3:30 p.m.

Conant is next on the first-day schedule at 5 p.m., as the Orioles take on Newport. The Tigers are typically a yearly opponent for Conant, but this will be the only time the two programs meet unless it happens in the playoffs. Conant is 5-0 after a 62-25 win over Hillsboro-Deering on Tuesday.

ConVal will follow Conant on the opening day with a 6:30 p.m. match-up against Fall Mountain. The two schools played on a yearly basis before the Wildcats dropped down to Division III a few years ago. The Cougars stand at 2-2 in Division II play after a 37-25 win at Monadnock on Tuesday.

Keene and Monadnock will close out the first day with an 8 p.m. game.

Day two will feature a pair of semifinals games featuring the winners of the opening days contest.

On Saturday, there will be three games prior to the championship game at 8 p.m.

Conant is tied with Keene for the all-time lead with three tournament victories. Conant won back-to-back titles in 2002-03 and then came away with the 2010 crown.

ConVal won the inaugural event in 2001.
