Mascenic boys down WLC
It has been a number of years since the Mascenic and Wilton-Lyndeborough boys basketball programs have played a regular season game.
But in the first of two meetings this year, the Vikings grabbed the upper hand in the series with a 60-48 win on Tuesday.
“We shot well early, but not really in the second half,” said Mascenic coach Jay Starr. “We got a lead and got a little comfortable with it.”
Mascenic led by eight after the first quarter and had another strong offensive quarter to build up a 41-22 advantage at the half. The Vikings’ lead grew to 21 at the end of the third, but WLC did not go away quietly.
“In the second half we continued to play hard and good things started to happen,” said WLC coach Ken Garnham.
After missing some good looks in the third, the Warriors capitalized in the fourth and trimmed a 20-plus point deficit to just 12 at the end.
“We could really play better,” said Starr. “Our defense needs to really step up and play better.”
Senior Jalen Rines led the victorious Vikings with 18 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Senior Casey Melrose also scored 18 to pace the Warriors.
Mascenic sophomore Jared Stauffeneker scored 13, but had only three in the second half as WLC really keyed in on the Vikings’ top two scorers.
“They have two very good shooters,” said Garnham. “We focused on Stauffeneker and Rines and we made sure our players were aware of where they were at all times.”
Junior Matt Cyr really came up big for the Vikings with 12 points and freshman Roman Ojala added eight.
“We had some guys who really stepped up for us and it’s nice to have the scoring spread out like that,” said Starr.
WLC senior Cole Letourneau scored 10.
With the victory, the Vikings improved to 2-4 with both wins coming in the last three games. For WLC, it was a sixth straight loss to begin the season.
“We have played a brutal first half schedule,” said Garnham. “We are a young and inexperienced team playing against some very good teams. But this was a step in the right direction.”
Mascenic will be at Sanborn tonight and WLC travels to Pittsfield on Friday.
