Letter: Pentagon cuts must be weighed
To the editor:
In the budget debate in Washington, advocates for rolling back the $1 trillion in cuts to the Pentagon budget have been some of the loudest voices.
As a scientist and educator, I think that it is important for Sens. Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen to take a hard look at these arguments.
Even after these cuts and the conclusion of two wars, Pentagon spending would still be higher than it was during most of Vietnam and the Cold War. Meanwhile, I see that our communities need more investment in climate change prevention and mitigation — investments that will be harder to make if the Pentagon doesn’t pay its fair share of deficit reduction efforts.
