Rifles, shotguns recovered from pond in Lyndeborough

LYNDEBOROUGH — Officer in Charge Rance Deware is trying to figure out how seven shotguns and rifles, including one semiautomatic and one muzzleloader, ended up in a fire pond at a Purgatory Falls Road property. At least one of the firearms was traced through its serial to an owner in Peterborough, who had reported it had been stolen.

According to Deware, Beth Penny of Lyndeborough was walking her 2-year-old son and her dog on the road Monday afternoon at about 3:30 p.m. Penny saw at least three long guns in the fire pond and reported what she saw to the pond’s owner, Paul Turner, who called police.

On Tuesday morning, Deware met with Penny, who showed him where she had seen the firearms. Deware said he could see four long guns.

With help from the town’s road agent, Kent Perry, who brought a boat to the site, Deware eventually recovered seven firearms.

Deware said the serial number on one of the firearms came back as having been stolen in Peterborough He said Peterborough police told him the owner had reported several firearms had been stolen, but serial numbers weren’t available.

The firearms were a Mossberg, model 800A, .308 bolt action rifle; a New England Firearms, 20-gauge shotgun; a Smith & Wesson, model 9161, 20-gauge shotgun; a Noble Hadyn, model 60F, 12-gauge shotgun; a Marlin, model 60, .22 semi-automatic rifle; a Winchester, model 94, 30-30 rifle; and a Thompson Center Arms, .50 caliber, Scout Muzzleloader.

Deware said none of the weapons were loaded. He said Perry reported that they appeared to have been tossed into the pond individually, like spears, and didn’t look like they’d been there a long time.

Deware said an investigation has been started and he was waiting to learn if the owner of the one firearm that’s been traced will be able to identify the others.
