System of teacher evaluations OK’d

NEW IPSWICH — The Mascenic School Board has unanimously approved a new system of teacher evaluation across all three schools. This includes reinstating a defunct mentor system for new teachers.

The district needs to update its system of evaluation and support, Linda Kalloger, assistant principal at Highbridge Hill Elementary School, told the School Board on June 3. That’s because the way the state evaluates teachers is shifting and so are the needs of the district .

The three-phase model of teacher evaluation was presented to the School Board at the meeting by a committee of teachers who have come up with a new model for evaluation based on the state’s model. The three-phase model is the same evaluation system Highbridge Hill has been using since the school opened two years ago . Now, it’s time to apply the model across the district, said Kalloger.

The system allows different approaches to evaluations, depending on the experience of the teacher. First, new teachers — teachers with less than three years experience teaching in New Hampshire or teachers who have recently switched grades or subjects — would be assigned a mentor from among established teachers to help establish goals and come up with a three-year curriculum plan. They would also be randomly observed, with meetings prior to and after observation.

Teachers with more than three years experience in the district would be evaluated differently. They would use self-evaluation tools to collaborate with administrators in order to set new growth goals for a three-year period.

A separate evaluation model would be employed for teachers not meeting the model’s “high standards” of instruction . The teacher would meet with administrators to discuss the areas that are in need of improvement. If the issues aren’t resolved, the teacher would be evaluated like a new teacher, with a mentor and scheduled classroom observances.
