Curran dominates region’s best

Daniel Curran, an 8th grader at South Meadow School continued his march toward another state championship, with visions of a New England title.

Curran, a two-time defending state champion, is 17-1 so far this year and 65-7 over his middle school career. Last year he was the only 7th grader to qualify for the New England Championships, going 2-2 against a field of 15 wrestlers in the 8th grade.

Recently, he won the first major tournament of the season — the Big Red New Englands at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. Curran went 3-0, with a bye, two pins, and a major decision (8-0), to claim the title against a field that included a defending Massachusetts and New England champion, the defending state champion from Rhode Island, and the 2nd place finisher from last year's Connecticut championships. His opponent scored the first two points in Curran’s first match, but he did not allow a point thereafter.

Curran trains with three programs — South Meadow School, Faucher Wrestling Club in Nashua and the Doughboy Wrestling Club in Lowell, Mass.
