CV artist creates mural for library

Cassandra Yerkes of Greenfield painted a mural entitled “Fizz, Boom, Read!” for the Peterborough Town Library’s summer reading program.

Yerkes is a 2014 graduate of ConVal High School. She will attend Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah in the fall and major in arts administration. She took art classes at ConVal with all three art teachers: Ms. Graham, Ms. Goldthwaite-Gagne, and Mr. Putnam.

She was the recipient of ConVal’s art achievement award for graduating seniors. She loves to paint and work in collage, and especially enjoys the work of Claude Monet.

“Spark a Reaction,” the summer reading program at the library, is open to children of all ages up to 18. Families may sign up any time before July 30. Participants will keep a reading log recording the minutes they listen, read to themselves, or to others. A drawing will be held each week, and readers who put in slips for each hour they read will have chances to win prizes such as books, iTunes cards, and Amazon gift cards. Readers who have read 10 hours by July 30 will receive a coupon to the Toadstool Bookshop.

For more information, call children’s librarian Lisa Bearce at 924-8040 or stop by the library. The 4 x 7-foot acrylic painting is on view through the summer during regular library hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
