Walk around the back of the Sharon Arts Center building, and you will see the culmination of years worth of organizing and fundraising, rising from a concrete pad. Or at least, you will see most of it. A handful of students from the ceramics department of the Sharon Arts Center’s partner organization, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, are busily working away under a sturdy wooden structure, placing bricks and building a chimney, straight and tall, for what will eventually be the center’s Anagama kiln.

The kiln’s completion will be the crowning achievement of Saturday’s annual Clayfest celebration, and it will mark an endeavor more than two years in the making. The Center had just begun plans to build an Anagama kiln when it first partnered with New Hampshire Institute of Art, according to NHIA ceramics department head Maureen Mills in an interview at Sharon Arts last week. It was an exciting opportunity for the institute to get involved in, she said, particularly as students are required to be part of a kiln-building project as part of their graduation requirements. Usually, students become involved in a kiln repair or rebuild, and have occasionally built all-new kilns, but the Anagama kiln is by far the most extensive project that the students have been involved in, she said.

John Baymore, a Professor of Ceramics at NHIA, who is overseeing the kiln’s construction, agreed that the project was a rare one. Students agreed to return to school early to build the kiln, but the completion of the project will net them the equivalent of a three-credit course, said Baymore. “The option to build something of this scale doesn’t come along often. It’s a huge investment of time and money. It’s not a common opportunity. Neither is having access to a kiln like this.”

The kiln is special for multiple reasons. One is its sheer size. The kiln has a limited life span — it will survive perhaps only 125 firings before needing to be replaced — but each firing will be able to hold a multitude of wares. Anagama is a Japanese term meaning “cave kiln.” The fire is kept at one end of the kiln, with no barrier between it and the rest of the cavern, and the chimney at the opposite end of the kiln. It’s wood-fueled and needs to be continuously fed throughout the life of the firing. Because of its massive size, firing it takes a community effort that lasts for several days. One of the unique effects of this kiln is that there is no separation between the fire and the items being fired. The ash from the fire gets into the clay, and then is melted into glass by the heat, creating ash glaze effects on the wares that can’t be found with other types of kilns.

“You can’t get that effect any other way, really,” commented Baymore.

Along with completing the kiln, Clayfest will also include outdoor raku firings and having hands-on open studio time with NHIA faculty, BFA and Community Education students. There is no admission and all are welcome. Clayfest is held at the Sharon Arts Center on Route 123 in Sharon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
