PETERBOROUGH — Voters have given town officials the OK to sell the GAR Hall in downtown Peterborough, although the building will have to go on the open market for one year.

The plan to sell was one of three options on the warrant at Wednesday’s open session of Town Meeting. A second choice was to approve a $300,000 bond to pay for renovations that would enable the town to keep the building and rent it. The third option was to put $172,000 into a new trust fund to be used for parks and recreation, which would have satisfied conditions set when the building was given to the town in 1898.

While a number of residents spoke in favor of keeping the building, voters followed the recommendation of both the Select Board and the Budget Committee and approved the article to sell the building. A year ago, the town had agreed to sell it to a private buyer for $100, but that sale never happened, because the N.H. Attorney General’s office determined the town needed to receive a fair-market price.

Voters also supported a $2.6 million bond for repairs on Union Street.

A request for $200,000 for road improvements to bring Robbe Farm Road and Legacy Lane up to town standards also passed. Payment for the road upgrades will come through betterment assessments on the properties on the two roads.

Details in Tuesday’s Ledger-Transcript.
