Conant alum Smith leads Bentley to win
Freshman lefty Kelsey Smith, a Conant High School alum, pitched a four-hitter in the opener and classmate Michelle DeVito followed with a two-hit shutout as the Bentley University softball team won a pair of games March 15 to complete its 10-game Florida trip with a five-game winning streak and a 6-4 record.
Smith pitched Bentley past Northwood University (Mich.), 3-1, and DeVito’s shutout came in a 3-0 decision over New York Institute of Technology.
Both contests were played at the National Training Center.
Smith (2-0) retired 17 of the last 18 batters she faced after surrendering a second-inning run that evened the score at 1-1 at the time. She finished with six strikeouts and walked only one.
Against Northwood, Smith helped herself in the second inning, leading off with an infield single. Freshman Kelsey Kennedy pinch ran for her, stole second and scored what proved to be the game-winner on a single to center by junior left fielder Shannon Connor.
Smith also led off the fourth with a double and scored Bentley’s third run on another Connor single.
In addition to Smith and Connor, Bentley also received two hits from senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier.
