Letter

Award reflects entire community

To the editor:

I am writing this letter to express my deep gratitude to all those members of “Bobcat Nation” who have helped in our quest for the “N.H. EDies Middle School of the Year.” We received this honor on May 15, and our students and staff members were very excited about the recognition.

First, I would like to recognize the efforts of the eight-member EDies committee. The selection process involves countless hours examining documents and traveling to schools to build their assessment. This work is difficult, and the committee members should be applauded for their dedication to improve the education that New Hampshire students receive.

Also, I would like to thank the Superintendent and his staff as well as the School Board. G.B.S. receives excellent support, and this has made it possible to provide a high-quality middle school education. Our curriculum, professional development and technology support are areas in which we rely on collaboration with the S.A.U. It is worth noting that our sister school, South Meadow, was also a recent recipient of the award. This fact confirms that the conditions effected by the board and the Superintendent have, indeed, fostered greatness.

The Great Brook staff is truly awesome. They have worked hard for many years and have created a culture of positive respect throughout the building. They are a dedicated group, and I am amazed at how often I find teachers still here hours after dismissal. In responding to a recent writing prompt — What is great about Great Brook? — one student wrote, “This school feels like a really big family.”

Finally, I would like to express appreciation for the terrific families within our four towns. The kids who come here each day bring the lion’s share of enthusiasm, humor and interests. It is their energy that truly drives our school.

While this honor has been bestowed upon the school, the reality is that the honor is a reflection of the entire community. We thank you for supporting our fine institution.

Jim Elder

Principal, Great Brook School
