To the editor:

Many people have asked if there will be a going-away party for Library Director Michael Price. It is Michael’s strong preference that there not be a party. Instead he has asked that people who would honor him make donations to “Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue,” 14 W. Swanzey Rd., Swanzey, NH 03446, either through the website, www.helpinggreyhounds.org, or by mail.

Today, Michael owns a greyhound, but many of us will not forget the many years he drove into town in his sports car with his Irish wolfhound aboard.

Michael’s last day at the library is scheduled to be June 13. The board of trustees wish him well in his retirement, which is well-earned after 14 years at the helm of the Peterborough Town Library.

Former library trustee Janet Shea, who was elected a library trustee in 2000, the same year Michael began his service as director, has written the following about Michael:

“He quickly recognized that the library was in some disarray. The death of his predecessor after a long illness and a change in working hours for the staff had left an institution in need of reorganizing. The staff had worked valiantly to keep things going but needed the position filled. Michael hired new reference and children’s librarians. He arranged files and reformulated policy and procedure manuals, and he handled all these processes handily.

“He then turned his attention to the building itself, which was in need of attention. The building’s needs were prioritized and a suggestion for a new addition was brought forth. These all, I believe, have made the library a better institution.”

We all join with Janet in her closing comment, “Michael is to be commended for these efforts and congratulated for his 30 years as a librarian.”
