Three hundred students from 10 area school will fill the stage of the Redfern Theater at Keene State College this weekend for the annual New Hampshire Dance Institute Event of the Year.

This year’s production, titled “Dance Me A Story,” is an original show written by NHDI Artistic Director Kristen Leach.

“With 300 children, this program really has 300 stories,” Leach said prior to a rehearsal with students from Mountain Shadows School on Friday. “Some kids are outgoing. Some are shy. I tell them all, ‘Smile and be proud of yourself.’ They may be scared, but when they come off stage, they’ll say ‘That was so much fun!’”

Leach said each school group will tell a well-known story during the first act. The students from Dublin’s Mountain Shadows School will be doing a dance based on “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!” by Dr. Seuss. In the second act, a grandmother and her granddaughter will be creating their own stories as they attempt to chase down a story snatcher.

“Stories have always been handed down verbally,” Leach said. “They are what set our species apart.”

The dancers will be accompanied by professional vocalists and a live orchestra directed by Boston conductor and composer Peter Mansfield.

In addition to Mountain Shadows, schools participating are Chesterfield School, Cutler School, Dublin Consolidated School, Fuller School, Great Brook School, Marlborough School, South Meadow School, Wells Memorial School and Westmoreland School. Show times are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
