Longtime resident joins Select Board
Newton previously served two terms
SHARON — Former two-term Select Board member Carl Newton was appointed to the Select Board on July 16, to fill the term of Patrick Galbreath, who resigned in June, citing increased work and travel responsibilities as well as the demands of helping to raise two small children.
Newton is a native of Sharon — “perhaps the only person currently living in Sharon who has lived his entire life in our town,” according to an email from town officials announcing the appointment. He served on the Select Board for two terms and was instrumental in the design and building of the town’s Meeting House.
Newton’s mother, Vi, was town clerk for many years and was also the town’s first representative on the ConVal School Board. His father, Wally Newton, was a selectman for several terms and worked on numerous projects to benefit the town, including the Bass Park sign hanging in the large meeting room at the Meeting House.
Newton’s term of office will expire in March 2014.
In other news, town officials said FairPoint management has confirmed that work will begin soon to re-route the telephone cable currently running down South Road. Because South Road is closed for much on the year and trees often fell on the cable, it has been difficult to maintain the cable.
The new cable will extend down Nashua Road to Route 124, which should provide a more direct route and more reliable service to homes in the area of Route 124.
The upgrade was originally planned to be completed last fall, but was delayed because of the proposed wind energy project in Temple and New Ipswich, which might have also required cable installation along Nashua Road. Since the wind energy project now seems unlikely, FairPoint is moving ahead with its plans.
Fairpoint has not set a firm date for when work will begin. The first step will be to install six to eight new poles along the western end of Nashua Road. The existing cable and poles on South Road will then be removed.
