Rapposelli beats entire field

ConVal alpine skier faster than every competitor, male or female, at Crotched race

After a great freshman ski season last year that saw her advance to the Meet of Champions, expectations were high for ConVal sophomore Maura Rapposelli coming into this year. Her performance during Thursday’s home giant slalom race at Crotched Mountain, however, exceeded even the highest of expectations. Rapposelli not only placed first in the girls division, but her time was the fastest of all 82 competitors, male and female, on the day. ConVal head coach Bill Leahy was blown away by the results.

“I wasn’t surprised that she won the girls race,” Leahy said. “To ski the best overall time of any skier did surprise me. She had two really great runs with very clean lines.”

Rapposelli made the best of mixed conditions on Thursday; there was a bit of ice on the run, she said, but she was able to find some fresh snow to carve up on her way down, picking the fastest and highest lines to avoid the ruts. Rapposelli skied out of the third position; even after her two great runs, she could do little but sit back and watch and hope her times held up.

“I really had no idea of what to expect,” Rapposelli said, “so I just kept watching and all the girls that came down after me had a slower time. Before I knew it, all the girls had finished and I had the fastest time.”

When she realized that she had not only beaten all of the girls, but all of the boys as well, she was shocked.

“I’d won a few races last year as a freshman, but I’ve never beat everybody before,” Rapposelli said. “It’s really quite crazy.”

Rapposelli’s combined time for her two runs was 1:24:63, just .2 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Grace Getman of Portsmouth and about half a second faster then boys winner Lars Hamilton, also of Portsmouth.

Also finishing for the ConVal girls were Claire Rupp (13th), Sarah Kolk (15th), Madeline Ciocci (23rd) and Devinne Larkin (26th). Emma Carney and Julia Walden also raced but did not finish.

The ConVal boys were predictably led by senior Ben Wescott, who placed 7th with a combined time of 1:26:90. Also finishing for the Cougar boys were Garrett Caisse (11th), Rob Peterson (15th), Ben Aldrich (18th), Garrett Mathews (27th), Dalton Coyne (31st) and Andrew Hopkins (37th).
