A slew of new Cougar coaches
Girls basketball coach spot open
The 2014-15 high school sports season is fast approaching, and with it comes a slew of coaching changes at ConVal. Golf coach Don Jalbert, who recently took a new teaching position in another district, has stepped down. That move coincides with the golf teams’ being moved down to a club sport; according to Athletic Director Mark Swasey, this gives the Cougars a chance to put an emphasis on a youth movement and build the program up at the middle school level to strengthen the team in coming years.
In a move that surprised few, Scott Daniels, technically the interim boys varsity soccer coach since the departure of Jon Hall last fall, will return as the permanent coach this fall. Griffin Meehan, known to Cougar followers as a lacrosse coach, will also coach the boys JV soccer team.
Dave Springfield, fresh off taking the Conant girls varsity basketball head coaching position, will do double duty this year; he’s taking over for Cher McClelland as the ConVal girls varsity soccer coach. Kevin Ritter will be the girls JV coach.
Cross-country coach Judy Heddy has retired from her position; the spot will be filled by Lance Flamino, who had a great deal of success in the same position at Conant High School before leaving that post last year.
The one position that remains open is that of the girls varsity basketball coach; Principal Brian Pickering has stepped down as coach, and the search is on for a replacement.
