Local runners qualify for regional Junior Olympics

Six local cross-country runners qualified for the USA Track and Field Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships in Long Island, NY this weekend.

Four runners from the Mascenic School District and two from ConVal High School competed in the New England Championships on Sunday at Freestyle Farm in Amherst and either qualified individually or as part of a team.

Competing with the Granite State Flash-West running program, ConVal junior Sydney Michalak placed second overall in the girls intermediate 5K, while her CoinVal classmate Shannon Glidden finished sixth.

Zack Allen finished fifth in the 3K bantam boys race, as his Granite State Flash A team placed first out of six teams. Allen was second on his team. DJ Turner and Jason Brundridge were part of the boys midget team that placed third to qualify.

Victoria Smith will also run at the regional meet after her 3k bantam girls team finished third.

The Region 1 championships will be held at Eisenhower Park on Long Island on Sunday. The Junior Olympic Nationals will be in Albuqueque, N.M. on Dec. 8.
