After rain postponed both their first meetings of the season and their proposed makeup doubleheader, the WLC and Mascenic softball and baseball teams finally got a chance to play two in Wilton on Sunday. It was a beautiful day for some ball games, and the community members came out in droves to support their teams.

Up at the softball field, WLC ran away with a pair of 12-run rule wins. First, the Warriors used an eight-run first to pull away early and win 16-3 in five innings. Amber Salo walked and scored for Mascenic, and Sarah Sharp scored as well. WLC did a lot of walking in that game; Sophie LeVert and Ally Schwab each scored three runs.

In game two, WLC’s Tesa Simpson led off with an out-of-the-park homer and the Warriors never looked back, winning 23-7 in five innings. Sarah Holka scored four times; Sami Bosquet, Schwab and Jenna Bragdon each scored three times. Bragdon went 3-3 and made a tremendous diving catch in center.

Even in a pair of blowouts, the Vikings dug deep and showed their Macenic pride; down 23-2 after four, first-year head coach Emily Gannon gave her girls an empassioned speech, rallying them to a five-run fifth. Casey Wayrynen, Sharp and Salo singled and scored; Meagan Brand and Cheyanne Sauvola also got on and reached the plate in the fifth. Sharp also made a gritty diving play at short, throwing the ball to second from the ground to force a runner.
