Multi-media production to premiere at Andy’s Playhouse
Andy’s Summer Playhouse continues their 2014 season with a world premiere of an original multimedia production, “The Block,” which opens Saturday.
Written and directed by Jared Mezzocchi, a multimedia theater artist and the director of last season’s production of “The Little Prince” and 2012’s “The BFG,” this new work uses text, movement, video and projection to tell the story of young Eleanor. When asked to write a creative story in a summer magazine for school, Eleanor is faced with one of the hardest challenges of her high school life — a writer’s block. From speed writes to associative word games to bizarre character studies, Eleanor leans on her half-made characters to help her understand how her mind can unlock all its mysterious ideas. Twenty-two young actors work as a tight ensemble to explore Eleanor’s world and special tale.
Mezzocchi is a recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace Theater Award and lives in Washington, D.C., where he is founder of the Projection Design Curriculum at University of Maryland (College Park). His recent TEDx presentation focused on the use of multimedia in storytelling and can be viewed online at The Technological Imagination: Jared Mezzocchi at TEDxPiscataquaRiver. As a native of New Hampshire and a former Andy’s kid himself, he brings a personal approach to the production.
The show runs July 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m., and a 2 p.m. matinee on July 20.
Andy’s Summer Playhouse is a nonprofit children’s theater that has been providing youth ages 8-18 the chance to work with professional artists to create energetic and innovate productions for the past 44 years.
