Swanson joins Select Board

WILTON — First-time candidate Rick Swanson has been elected to replace Select Board member Steve McDonough, who declined to run this year.

Swanson has municipal experience as a city council member in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he lived prior to moving to Wilton, and he is currently on the budget committee. Voters on Tuesday widely elected Swanson for Select Board over Jim Tuttle, 323-144.

“I was surprised,” said Swanson of the election results. “I figured I was a long-shot as a newcomer. But I guess when I stood in front of the Post Office and Recycling Center, speaking to residents, a lot of people shared my concerns of rising property taxes. That resonated with people. I think the residents were very gracious to listen to what I had to say.”

Tuttle also lost in his race for the Water Commission. Tuttle, who also serves on the Sewer Commission, was running for re-election to the position, but was defeated by Bill Condra in a 295-170 vote.

For the School District, Harry Dailey and Mary Guild will be filling the two three-year terms for Wilton, having beaten out Nickolas Chapo for the positions. Dailey, the incumbent for the position, gained 265 votes, and Guild 325, while Chapo fell short with 115. For the Lyndeborough at-large three-year position, Fran Bujak, who was running unopposed, will continue to hold the position.

Two open positions on the Budget Committee will still have to be determined by write in votes. Don Davidson, the current Budget Committee chair, will continue in his position. No candidates ran for the open position for moderator, although the current Wilton-Lyndeborough School District Moderator Walter Holland, won by write-in vote.

Town officers will be sworn in tonight at Town Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Wilton Town Hall.
