Hilltop Cafe a great neighbor

To the editor:

On Oct. 10 an article was published in the Ledger-Transcript, which gave the impression that The Hilltop Cafe and Bakery does not have the support of its neighbors here on Abbot Hill.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The two people quoted in the article, with concerns primarily about traffic, don’t represent the hundreds of us on Abbot Hill and in Wilton, Temple, Mason, and Milford who find The Cafe and all that it has brought to Abbot Hill quite amazing. It is a place to get a delicious breakfast or lunch (which will also be beautiful), a place to meet with friends, a place to read or work while enjoying some of the best coffee or tea in the area, a place to take friends and family from out of town for a nice meal.

From Abbot Hill Road it still looks like a farmhouse and a farmyard, not “another business center”, as was claimed. But the young owners have put in an extraordinary amount of work to make The Hilltop Cafe a special meeting place for many. They cleared out the brambles, scrub brush, and poison Ivy from the yard and put in grass and a small stage. Their community concerts were free and fun, and many families came and brought their kids. Perhaps they were just too popular.

I don’t want these young people to be discouraged by such negative and unwarranted publicity. I want them to keep getting up at 4 in the morning and baking those fabulous croissants.
