Tolkien and fantasy focus of presentation Tuesday
A presentation entitled “J. R. R. Tolkien and the Uses of Fantasy” will be offered at the Wilton Public & Greg Free Library on Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
New Hampshire Humanities Council NHHC scholar Clia M. Goodwin, Ph.D. will discuss Tolkien’s background and sources, using images of Tolkien’s illustrations and maps for Middle Earth, and the role of The Hobbit in the creation of Tolkien’s world. Focusing on his cinematic, visual skills in storytelling, Goodwin will talk about the continuing popularity of Tolkien and why fantasy answers so many of our human concerns.
Goodwin received her Ph.D. in comparative medieval literature from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a concentration in Old English, Old French, and Old Norse literatures and languages. She has taught in the Humanities Department at UNH for more than 20 years. She is not only a lecturer, but a teacher, a writer and a musician.
