On Tuesday night, the ConVal School Board voted 8-2 in favor of a motion to censure Temple representative Gail Cromwell for acting publicly in opposition to a board-supported bond.
“Although not part of the basis for the motion, I note that Ms. Cromwell consistently violates what can be referred to as common standards for board behavior or best practices,” wrote Peterborough representative Beverly Bacon in a prepared statement. “I find Ms. Cromwell’s actions to be unacceptable, counter-productive and not in the best interests of this board, the SAU, or the students of the ConVal School District.”
Bacon presented the motion at Tuesday’s School Board meeting at Hancock Elementary School. Bacon cited letters to the editor Cromwell published, public hearings she held in Temple and informational documents she circulated about the proposed $4.9 million bond for code, accessibility and life safety improvements at ConVal High School. She said Cromwell’s actions ran counter to board policies.
Cromwell said constitutional rights superseded her board responsibilities.
“I’ve said this all along,” said Cromwell. “When you join the board, you do not leave your First Amendment rights at the door. You have a duty to inform people.”
