The ConVal football team can advance to the Division III championship game for the first time in program history with a win against Portsmouth tonight.
The No. 3 seed Cougars travel to No. 2 Portsmouth for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Results from the game will be reported here on Sunday.
ConVal lost an early-season game to Portsmouth, 20-7, but the Cougars are a much different team after playing six more games.
“That game could have gone either way,” said ConVal head coach Greg Leonard. “The thing that hurt us in the last game was that we only had three defensive lineman to get after the quarterback. This time we need to pressure the quarterback from various locations.”
In that Sept. 18 home game versus Portsmouth, ConVal led 7-6 at the half only to allow two big plays in the second half, one an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the third and a 46-yard pass on third and nine, which eventually led to the Clippers' final score.
"Since the beginning of the season, the big play has been cut down a lot," ConVal senior Anthony Faccidomo said.
The ConVal offense has grown since then, scoring 25 points a game and adding senior Barry Powers to the rushing attack.
"I know that our offense is capable of putting points on the board," said Leonard.
Local cross country runners are also looking to fare well at this weekend's Meet of Champions in Nashua. Mascenic junior Jacy Christiansen is in the hunt for a state championship while the ConVal girls were the lone local squad to advance as a team.
