Hundreds mourn Rindge man killed in hunting accident

Hundreds of mourners gathered at St. Patrick Church in Jaffrey on Wednesday for the farewell service of Timothy Letourneau, a 21-year-old Rindge man killed in a hunting accident Saturday.

So many were present that more than 100 had to experience the ceremony through open windows from the outside of the church, where a priest brought them communion at the appropriate time.

“Tim knew every single one of you somehow,” Timothy’s brother Luke Letourneau said to those assembled. “It might have just been for 10 seconds or for 21 years, but he knew all of you. He was everyone’s best friend.”

Calling hours Tuesday at Cournoyer funeral home had to be extended from the original 4 to 7 p.m. until after 11 p.m. because of the number of visitors.

More on the service in Thursday's newspaper.

Antrim Town Meeting: Articles approved to eliminate deficit

March 12th 2010 at 10:57:09 AM

ANTRIM -- After supporting two articles that could eliminate the town’s deficit by the end of the year, voters approved an advisory budget committee in an effort to prevent deficits in the future.

After declining to deliberate on the question, voters approved an article to transfer $194,077 from a tax increment finance (TIF) district fund to the general fund.

After deliberation of a $450,000 article designed to address the town’s deficit, a single “no” vote rang through the Town Gym at Antrim Elementary School during Thursday evening’s Town Meeting. The remainder of the more than 175 voters at Town Meeting approved the article, although many had questions about the origin of the deficit and the steps being taken to prevent another one.

Conant girls cap Cinderella run with state title

March 11th 2010 at 09:37:43 AM

The Conant girls basketball team won its second Class M championship in the last three years by beating Campbell 53-48 on Wednesday at Southern New Hampshire University.

As the eighth seed, the Orioles took one of the more difficult paths to the finals. They had to beat ninth seeded Hopkinton, a team they split with during the regular season, and then go on the road to face top ranked Somersworth.

Conant earned the road victory and then knocked off fourth seeded Mascoma in the semifinals to advance to Wednesday’s title game.

And all that stood in front of the Orioles and another banner was the Cougars, the number two team.

Conant trailed by as many as 10 early in the second quarter, but a 13-3 run tied the game at 24 with a little over a minute remaining in the half.

Campbell scored the final four points of the half, but the Orioles still had the momentum.

Brooke Springfield scored 11 of her game high 26 in the second quarter and collected six more in the third, as Conant outscored Campbell 19-3 for a 43-31 lead going into the fourth.

Holly Hodgman scored six in the third and Kim Daniels added five, as the Orioles stepped it up on both ends of the floor. The Cougars never got any closer than seven in the final quarter.

Hodgman finished with 12 points and a career high 14 rebounds, while Daniels scored 10.

Conant was 17-5 on the season and won its last eight games, including the playoffs.

Late run helps Conant boys to 5th straight state title

March 11th 2010 at 09:34:19 AM

The Conant boys basketball team won a record fifth straight Class M championship on Wednesday night when it defeated Berlin 41-35 in front of almost 2,000 people at Southern New Hampshire University.

The Orioles held the record at four consecutive titles and Wednesday added another to the total.

Going into the game undefeated at 21-0, Conant was matched up with the second seeded Mountaineers, 19-2.

Conant struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, shooting just 4-for-20 and trailed by three at the break.

It took until about the two-minute mark of the third for the Orioles to regain a lead that had eluded them since the midway point of the second quarter.

A Sean Martin steal and lay-up tied the game at 22 and Kemph Kim put Conant ahead with a lay-up of his own. The Orioles led by four going into the fourth and six early in the quarter, but Berlin came back to tie it at 31 with 3:52 left.

Consecutive baskets by Jimmy Peard and Martin pushed the lead back to four and the Mountaineers never got any closer than three.

Conant shot 8-for-15 in the second half and held a 10-point advantage at the free throw line for the game.

Martin led all scorers with 20, while playing every minute of the game, and was the only Oriole in double figures.

Peard had seven points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 1:39 left. Kim scored five with five rebounds and five assists.

Conant is 108-2 over the last five seasons and has won 43 straight.

It was a clean sweep for Conant basketball Wednesday as the boys and girls teams each won a Class M championship at Southern New Hampshire University.

The Conant girls basketball team took home its second state title in three years with a 53-48 victory over Campbell. Junior Brooke Springfield scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Orioles, who came in as the No. 8 seed before pulling off a string of upsets.

The boys followed by winning their fifth straight state crown with a 41-35 victory over Berlin. Sean Martin scored a game-high 20 points to help the Orioles cap a perfect season.

Lower Mascenic budget passes; cuts coming next

March 10th 2010 at 04:38:10 PM

Mascenic School District voters overwhelmingly approved the proposed budget, an outcome that will force the School Board to cut another $333,000.

At the deliberative session, voters amended the proposed budget from $15,533,098 to $15,200,000, citing the recent withdrawal of Mason and the resulting 27 percent increase in school tax rates. Superintendent Leo Corriveau has said the $333,098 cut could require the removal of teaching and administrative positions in addition to middle school sports and district technology plans.

By a vote of 1,112 to 570, voters declined to support a larger default budget of $15,984,460, which district officials had strongly supported in the weeks leading up to the election. The default budget would have nearly equaled last year’s proposed budget.

Both the teachers’ contract and staff contracts also failed, by 1,036 to 631 and 1,045 to 611 respectively, as did articles requesting authority for special meetings to address revised contracts within the coming year. Voters defeated the special meetings 992 to 674 and 1,000 to 627, respectively.

ConVal bond fails by 23 votes; recount under way

March 10th 2010 at 10:25:55 AM

PETERBOROUGH -- A recount is under way at the ConVal School District after a proposed bond received 59.6 percent of the vote yesterday, just 23 votes below the needed three-fifths majority.

According to Superintendent Richard Bergeron, Peterborough supported the $4.9 million bond nearly three to one. Together with 71 percent support in Dublin, 67 percent support in Sharon and 65 percent support in Hancock, the bond came within a hair’s breadth of passing. Sealed ballot boxes from the district’s nine member towns are being taken to the district offices where a recount will soon begin.

The state has given the district one week to perform the recount, after which the district’s approval for 55 percent state building aid on the project will be forfeited. At this point, Bergeron is not getting his hopes up.

“It’s so close that we have to have the recount. We owe it to the voters and to the people who worked so hard to get the message out,” said Bergeron, who together with the School Board will meet Wednesday night with the two finalists of the ConVal High School principal search. “It’s kind of a sad message to share with our finalists.”

Dublin's 'Granny D' dies at 100

March 10th 2010 at 07:08:47 AM

Doris "Granny D" Haddock of Dublin, who in later years brought national attention to campaign finance issues, died Tuesday at age 100.

In 1999, Haddock set out to walk across the United States to draw attention to her cause. It was a 3,200-mile trip that lasted into 2000, and cemented her as a central figure for the fight against money in politics.

In 2004, she ran for U.S. Senate, but fell to incumbent Sen. Judd Gregg. She also penned an autobiography, "You're Never Too Old To Raise A Little Hell."

In Rindge, voters give a resounding 'No'

March 9th 2010 at 08:02:30 PM

Rindge voters sent a clear message Tuesday, rejecting the budget and all but one warrant article with money attached.

The proposed budget, which was $4,000 higher than the default budget, was voted down 553-476.

The only warrant article with money attached to pass called for $72,000 for a state-mandated revaluation of town properties. Two bonds, one for a new fire truck and the other for a new plow truck, received a majority of votes but fell below the 60 percent required.

Voters also rejected a 2 percent pay increase for town employees and an article that sought to have the town treasurer position become appointed rather than elected.

So long, downtown Peterborough wireless

March 8th 2010 at 05:44:19 PM

PETERBOROUGH — The town has dropped the downtown wireless service because it cannot afford to replace the outdated equipment.

“We have no money. I had no choice but to drop it” Town Administrator Pam Brenner said Friday.

Brenner said the town wireless equipment stopped working about two weeks ago and town does not have the $9,000 to buy new equipment.

“The old equipment became very dated and unreliable,” she said. “We were having problems with it and it’s very complicated.”
