Democrats declare candidacy for state rep.

Two years ago, Dick Ames and Douglas Ley announced themselves as Democratic candidates for election to the New Hampshire House. We pledged to honor a shared vision of a New Hampshire featuring civility, fairness, and recognition of the need for respectful balance between individual and community interests. Two years later we return, joined by Pat Martin, to again ask voters to support us and to renew New Hampshire’s commitment to honesty, decency, and the pursuit of pragmatic solutions.

Today, Dick Ames and Douglas Ley are declaring themselves candidates for re-election from Cheshire District 9, which includes Dublin, Harrisville, Jaffrey and Roxbury. Joining them in Cheshire District 14 (the four towns in District 9, plus Rindge and Fitzwilliam), Democrat Patricia Martin is declaring her candidacy for the seat vacated by retiring incumbent Harry Young.

As we enter upon the 2014 electoral campaign, we pledge to continue honoring the New Hampshire traditions of civility, respect and the placing of bipartisan solutions ahead of the ideological posturing and bitter partisanship so characteristic of Republican Speaker Bill O’Brien’s tenure between 2010 and 2012. We will continue to support major bi-partisan initiatives such as Medicaid expansion and fair and sufficient funding for road maintenance, mental health and other essential needs. We endorse a balanced and sensible budget for New Hampshire building on that passed in 2013, which restored needed social programs, improved higher education funding, and finally provided the long-promised state aid for Jaffrey’s wastewater facility.

Looking forward, we will continue defending the interests of working people across New Hampshire, creating new jobs, supporting technological innovation and positioning New Hampshire to reap the advantages of renewable energy. Above all, we remain committed to our bedrock values of balancing individual and community needs and pursuing solutions through respectful and civil dialogue.

To voters in our districts, we hope you will join us and we ask for your support and goodwill.

Dick Ames and Douglas Ley live in Jaffrey. Patricia Martin lives in Rindge.
