ConVal should be ashamed of its decision
The ConVal Administration and Student Council should collectively hang their heads in shame for their refusal to allow Brandon Garabrant to wear his Marine Corps uniform during commencement exercises.
Principal Pickering defends his position by stating that “the graduation ceremony is intended to celebrate the accomplishments of the ConVal seniors as an entire class, without singling out individual students for specific achievements.” This defense might actually hold water were it not for the special attention given to the Valedictorian, Salutatorian and the recipient of the Faculty Award for their specific individual achievements.
His flippant comparison between a Marine Corps uniform and a Notre Dame football helmet is weak at best and insulting to the fine men and women of the military. As Brandon’s wearing the uniform at graduation would in no way detract from the celebration of the accomplishments of the rest of the graduating class, the ConVal community should be honored to have a graduate such as Brandon and embrace the uniform of the Marine Corps with pride.
