ConVal and its 2013 scholars
To the editor:
There was something special about Awards Night at ConVal Regional High School last week. Scholarship recognition of achievement and the potential of our graduating seniors plus appreciation of the teachers and staff under whose nurturing guidance they have flourished was bound to be cause for celebration. This was the award winners’ well deserved night and one they will never forget. Nothing can take away from that, but this year I think there was something more.
From the opening — ConVal Community Scholarship Foundation Dollars for Scholars awards to graduates who face unusual challenges in starting their postsecondary education — to the 54th and last — the Peterborough Garden Club Award — there was, for me, at least, a heightened sense of pride in our graduates, our high school and in related gains achieved in our regional community.
This can be accounted for, in part, by our, accessible, and badly needed new gymnasium, fresh paint and all. But credit, I believe, should go also to Richard Bergeron, our retiring superintendent, our relatively new high school principal, Brian Pickering, former School Board chair, Bart Goodeve, other tireless board members and numerous others not named here to whose leadership so many have responded so well.
There are larger and more affluent towns reputed to have great high schools, but I doubt that many of them enjoyed the elevated spirit I saw at ConVal in Peterborough last week.
