So, do you love  downtown Jaffrey?

To the editor:

Decades ago I loved to walk over the bridge in downtown Jaffrey, pausing to admire the daylilies planted along the river by Cindy Foley and her volunteers. I soon began pulling a few weeds.

Walking, weeding, noticing the strollers, the dog-walkers, Nancy Stone biking, Janet White watering the bridge planters. I pulled a few more weeds, bagged them in Market Basket bags and toted them home for my compost pile.

I added a few peach daylilies, some flag iris, and some blackeyed susans in a bare spot across from Stan’s Barbershop. I looked at the river racing over the dam, the fountain in the middle of the river, the yellow iris growing wild almost in the river. Weeding was pleasing, like sculpting, and certainly good exercise. People were friendly, appreciative.

Now, I walk with a cane, and have had to stop weeding because I’m afraid of teetering into traffic. Other volunteers from Cindy’s “Weeding Camp” have similar problems. When I looked for the yellow daylilies by the bridge this year, I saw only weeds.

I’m wondering if the school children, the dog-walkers, the strollers who like flowers, love downtown Jaffrey, would consider carrying a plastic shopping bag and plucking a few weeds before they cross the street at the light. Don’t forget to pause and look at the river and notice the leaves change.
