Buying local food becoming easier
To the editor:
I enjoyed reading the editorial about buying local food and how it needs to be easier.
One trend nationwide that was not mentioned was the growing movement for communities to come together and open food co-ops. Food co-ops do exactly that, they make buying local food easier. For years there has been talk about opening a food co-op in Peterborough. More recently, the Monadnock Food Co-op opened this past April in Keene, and many of our member owners live in our region, including myself. Our co-op, of which I am the general manager, has been open just eight short months and already we have local product sales of over $1 million, which has already begun to have a huge impact on our regional economy. Many local products come from the farms you mentioned in your article, including Mayfair Farm in Harrisville and Coll’s Farm in Jaffrey.
